The boss was originally designed to deflect blows from the centre of round shields, though they also provided a place to mount the shield's grip. A boss provides a significant advantage for deflecting blows when using a punching motion. This boss is made from 1.6mm steel.

    Cheap, affordable, strong, plenty of space.
    Having recently purchased this to complete a centre-grip shield, I find that it is well worth it. In fact, I managed to dent my sparring partners helmet!
    I, for one however, decided to drill four more holes inbetween the existing ones for extra security.
