Dark Age / Early Medieval Helmets - In historiography, the term Dark Ages or Dark Age most commonly refers to the European Early Middle Ages, the period encompassing (roughly) 476 to 1000. This concept of a dark age was created by the Italian scholar Francesco Petrarca. Items in stock unless otherwise indicated.

The term Dark Ages was originally intended as a sweeping criticism of the character of Late Latin literature. Later historians expanded the term to include not only the lack of Latin literature, but also a lack of contemporary written history and material cultural achievements in general. Popular culture has further expanded on the term as a vehicle to depict the Middle Ages as a time of backwardness. - Reference: Wikipedia

Sutton Hoo Viking Helmet

This replica is based on the finds made at Sutton Hoo in England.

The Sutton Hoo ceremonial helmet is based on a spangen type helm and is often compared to the Vendel Age helmets from Sweden.

Sutton Hoo is of a primary importance to early medieval historians because it sheds light on a period of English history which is on the margin between myth, legend and historical documentation. Use of the site culminated at a time when the ruler (Raedwald) of East Anglia held senior power among the English, and played a dynamic (if ambiguous) part in the establishment of Christian rulership in England. It is central to understanding of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of East Anglia and of the period in a wider perspective.

The inscription on the crest is an invocation for protection from the helmet’s owner Oshere to the Holy Trinity. This reconstruction clearly illustrates the skill of the 8th century craftsmen.
