Roman Helmets - A galea was a Roman soldier's helmet. Some gladiators, myrmillos, also wore a bronze galea with a face mask and a decoration, often a fish on its crest. The exact form or design of the helmet varied significantly over time, between differing unit types, and also between individual examples .
Items in stock unless otherwise indicated.

Originally, roman helmets were influenced by the neighboring Etruscans, people who utilised the "Nasua" type helmets. The Greeks in the south also influenced Roman design in the early history of Rome. For instance, the ancestor of the Chalcidic helmet, the Attic helmet was widely used by officers until the end of the empire. Lastly, the Gauls were the peoples who most impacted the design of the Roman helmet hence th popular "Imperial Gallic" type helmets. In addition to this, it is commonly thought that the Gauls also introduced chainmail to the Romans. - Reference: Wikipedia

Roman Trooper
This authentic helmet replica is formed from 18 gauge steel to match the originals. The formidably tough Roman Legionnaire marched triumphantly from the cold mists of England to the hot, dry plains of the mid-East relying on a helmet for head protection.

It is speculated that the plume whilst magnificent was impractical on a day-to-day basis and therefore used mainly only for parade.

Gladiator Victory Parade Helmet
Gladiators could have been either prisoners of war, slaves or criminals condemned to gladiator schools (ad ludum gladiatorium). There were also a number of volunteer gladiators (auctoratus). By the end of the republic as many as half of the gladiators were auctoratii.

One of the benefits of becoming a gladiator for slaves and criminals is that they were then allowed to have relationships with women and although they themselves could never become Roman citizens - marriages and children become recognised under Roman law.
This helmet was was most likely worn during a victory parade.

The brass face plates on this helmet lock together using a hinged pin.

Centurion Imperial Gallic - Type H with plume

Size: 65cm circ
Weight:1.7kg

This helmet is a modern reconstruction of a second century centurion's helmet. The embossed eyebrows and the circular brass bosses are typical of Imperial Gallic helmets. There are several different styles of Imperial Gallic helmets and it was more than likely a matter of personal preference and/or armoury issue as to what type was worn by a particular Roman soldier.

Most of the helmets used by legionaries had a crest holder. The crests were usually made of plumes or horse hair.

There is some evidence (Vegetius writings and some sculptures) that legionaries had their crests mounted longitudinally and centurions had them mounted transversally.

There is evidence that crests were not used in combat but only in parades, except by centurions who probably wore them all the time.

Roman Imperial Gallic - Type I
All Brass - Type I.

This helmet dates from the last half of the first century, which continued through the second and third centuries. It is essentially the same design as othe Imperial Gallic helmets but differs in that it was made in the cupric alloy orichalcum (brass) instead of iron. Brass helmets suggest a higher rank, perhaps that of optio.

Helm is 28cm in height.

Roman Imperial Gallic - Type G
The original example of this distinct type was found in a cave near Hebron, Israel, and as it was probably war-loot of the Jewish Zealots of the Bar Kochba Revolt under Hadrian, can be closely dated. It is the earliest Roman helmet discovered in which the post-Dacian Wars crossbars were probably part of the original construction, as evidenced by the brass lunate decorations applied between the crossbars. During the time of the Dacian Wars with Germanic tribes, Imperial Roman soldiers began reinforcing their helmets with added plates and crossbars. These additions added strength along with beauty and protected against the German's heavy swords and axes.
