Roman Caligae (sandals)
	Roman Caligae (Latin; singular caliga) are heavy-soled military shoes or sandals which were worn by Roman legionary soldiers and auxiliaries throughout the history of the Roman Republic and Empire. They were worn by all ranks up to and including centurions. The sandals were constructed from leather and laced up the center of the foot and onto the top of the ankle. Additionally, iron hobnails were hammered into the sole, serving three purposes: to reinforce the caligae to provide the soldier with better traction to 'weaponise' the caligae (i.e. to allow the soldier to inflict damage by kicking with them) The sole on these Roman sandals is made of 4 layers of strong leather plus hobnails. Viking Ankle shoe
	Handcrafted leather shoes made by the turn-shoe method. The sole and upper were joined together inside out, and then turned right side out. This type of shoe was usually fastened by a drawstring or lacing. Landsknecht Shoes - Black Legion
	These Landsknecht shoes are very suited to 16thCE re-enactment but are perfect in Style for the 'Black Legion' who are often pictured in black with red under garments showing through the slashes. The 'Black Legion' or 'Black Bands' were a group of Landsknechts mercenaries in French employ and who refused to return to Germany in accordance with Maximillian's decree after the imperial defeat at Ravenna in 1512.
